Philosophicum, University building in Bockenheim, Germany.

The Philosophicum is an eight-story university building in Frankfurt's Bockenheim district with a modern exposed steel frame structure. Its rectangular form and visible steel beams on the facade create a distinctive architectural presence on the campus.

The building was constructed between 1958 and 1960 as one of the first structures in Germany to feature an exposed steel skeleton system. This project marked a turning point in post-war architecture and demonstrated new possibilities in construction engineering.

This building became the heart of philosophical inquiry at Goethe University, drawing students who wanted to explore big questions about existence and knowledge. You can still see how the spaces are used today for conversations and intellectual exchange among the university community.

The building is located on the Goethe University campus and is easy to reach on foot with clear pathways to the entrance. As an active university building, visitors should expect classes to be in session and some areas may not be open to the public.

The construction used an innovative welding technique that had never been applied in Europe before the project. This method required extensive testing and special approvals before work could begin on the site.
