Hoheweg, Fishing cutter in North Sea, Germany.
The Hoheweg is a North Sea fishing cutter measuring 26.6 meters in length and equipped with a Deutz eight-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine. The vessel was fitted with modern navigation systems such as radar and AIS to track and monitor its position during fishing operations.
The vessel was built in 1974 at the Julius Diedrich shipyard in Oldersum and later retrofitted in 1980 with a Kort nozzle on its propeller. Years later the boat sank in 2006 in the Außenweser and had to be recovered in a complex operation from seven meters depth.
The vessel represents an era of German fishing tradition in the North Sea, where such boats were part of everyday life. They show how fishermen worked here for decades and what kind of equipment was necessary for this demanding work.
The boat is accessible by water or boat since it is located in a river area. Visitors should be prepared for weather conditions and water level changes that can affect access to the site.
The boat was equipped with a special Kort nozzle, an innovative propeller improvement that increased its thrust in the 1980s. This retrofit shows how fishermen modernized their vessels to work more efficiently.
