Carnac, Prehistoric megalithic site in Brittany, France
The Carnac alignments feature over 3,000 standing stones arranged in parallel rows across multiple kilometers of the Brittany landscape near the Atlantic coast.
The standing stones of Carnac were erected between 4500 BC and 2000 BC, making them one of the largest collections of Neolithic monuments in Europe.
The standing stones hold significant archaeological value, with interpretations suggesting they served as astronomical calendars or ceremonial gathering spaces for ancient communities.
Visitors can access the megalithic sites through guided tours from April to September, with protective fencing ensuring preservation of the ancient stones.
The local municipality maintains a bilingual French-Breton identity, with street signs and official documents available in both languages since 2008.
