Abri de la Madeleine

The rock shelter stands beneath an overhanging cliff in the Vézère valley, containing multiple archaeological layers from different periods of human occupation.

Édouard Lartet and Henry Christy initiated the first systematic excavations in 1863, discovering numerous artifacts that defined the Magdalenian culture.

The settlement contains numerous carved objects, bone tools, and artistic depictions providing information about daily activities of Upper Paleolithic communities.

Visitors can explore the archaeological site through guided tours while the artifacts found at La Madeleine are displayed at the National Museum of Prehistory.

The discovery of a three-year-old child skeleton with shell jewelry from the end of Magdalenian period occurred at this location in 1926.
