Kir Lake, Artificial lake in Dijon, France
Kir Lake is an artificial body of water southwest of Dijon covering roughly 37 hectares, with the Ouche River flowing through it. The water sits at about 245 meters elevation, and its shoreline features a supervised swimming area, boat rental facilities, children's play equipment, picnic grounds, and a waterside restaurant.
The project was developed in the 1960s under Mayor Félix Kir to improve Dijon's water supply and support urban growth. Its completion in 1964 became a turning point for the city's modern development and infrastructure improvements.
The lake bears the name of a former mayor who shaped Dijon's modern development, and visitors sense this civic heritage while walking around the shore. Local families gather here for Sunday outings, making it a space where the community comes together beyond the wine culture.
The lake is easy to reach and offers activities year-round, with warmer months being ideal for water and outdoor recreation. Visitors should know that some facilities may be seasonal, so checking local conditions before a visit is wise.
Every July 14th, the lake mirrors fireworks above it as Dijon celebrates the French national holiday, transforming the water into a shining stage for the night's display. This annual spectacle draws large crowds who gather along the shore to watch the reflections dance on the surface.
