Punta dell'Alp, Mountain summit at France-Italy border, Hautes-Alpes and Piedmont.
Punta dell'Alp is a mountain summit in the Escreins massif that rises to 3031 meters (9945 feet) and forms the border between France and Italy. The peak features steep slopes and exposed rock formations along its northern and southern ridges.
The peak marks a key section of the France-Italy border established through international treaties following territorial negotiations in the Alpine region during the 1800s. This boundary definition shaped both the landscape and mountain routes across the Alps.
Local mountain guides from both French and Italian sides maintain traditional climbing routes, passing their knowledge of the peak to new generations.
Climbers can reach the summit from Saint-Véran in France or Chianale in Italy, with the Agnel refuge providing shelter at 2580 meters (8465 feet) elevation. Summer offers the most stable conditions for an ascent up this exposed terrain.
From the summit, visitors can see both the Queyras Regional Nature Park in France and the Po Valley in Italy at the same time due to its precise border location. This dual view is rare, as most peaks offer perspective in only one direction.
