Bivacco Boerio, Bivouac hut in Bellino, Italy.
Bivacco Boerio is a mountain shelter located at 3089 meters in the Western Alps, positioned above the southern shore of Lake Mongioia. The octagonal structure accommodates 10 people with a mix of fixed and folding beds, plus a table and benches for basic comfort.
The shelter was built in 1992 and named after Franco Boerio, a member of the mountain rescue team from the Varaita Valley. The naming honored his work in keeping mountaineers safe in this alpine region.
The shelter lets mountaineers explore the Cottian Alps without needing long descents back to lower areas. It plays a role in enabling high-altitude mountaineering and outdoor travel in this region.
The shelter is accessible only on foot and suited for experienced mountaineers familiar with alpine routes. Visitors should bring weather-resistant gear, as conditions at this altitude can change rapidly.
The shelter uses solar power to control its lighting system, helping mountaineers navigate even when darkness falls. Water comes directly from Lake Mongioia right next to the hut, making it self-sufficient for basic supplies.
