Lac Achard, Glacial lake in Chamrousse, France.
Lac Achard is a glacial lake in the Belledonne mountain range at approximately 1917 meters elevation. The water body stretches about 260 meters long and 100 meters wide, surrounded by rocky alpine terrain.
The lake formed during the last glacial period when moving ice carved a basin into the mountain landscape. This ice age left behind the water body as a remnant of a much colder era in the region.
The lake belongs to the protected Espace Naturel Sensible area, where regulations maintain the preservation of local mountain ecosystems and wildlife.
You can reach the lake by following marked hiking trails from Chamrousse 1750, with parking available nearby. The paths are well-signposted, making it straightforward for visitors to find their way to the water.
The lake connects to several smaller water bodies nearby that gradually fill with water over time. These linked alpine pools form an interconnected system within the mountain environment.
