Lazika, Planned urban development in Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, Georgia.
Lazika is a planned urban development on the Black Sea coast in western Georgia that includes residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, and educational facilities. The project covers a large area between the coastal towns of Anaklia and Kulevi with modern infrastructure.
The project was announced as a development initiative in 2011 and began construction in 2012 with an administrative building. The initiative aimed to transform the region into a major trade and logistics hub.
The name comes from the ancient Kingdom of Lazica, which existed in what is now western Georgia during the early medieval period. This historical reference shapes how the place is understood today.
The development sits directly on the coast between two existing ports, offering access to maritime trade routes. Visitors should note that this is a planned development, so only limited facilities are currently available on site.
The project followed a special legal framework based on English commercial law and required constitutional amendments to implement. This made the initiative an unusual experiment in Georgian economic policy.
