Church of Gagra

The Church of Gagra stands with three naves constructed from rough ashlar stone and features windows that allow natural light throughout the structure.

Built in the sixth century by the Anchabadze dynasty, the church underwent substantial reconstruction in 1902 and received consecration as Saint Hypatius Church in 1903.

The church structure displays traditional Bolnuri crosses on the eastern door tympanum, representing Georgian Orthodox architectural elements from the medieval period.

Located near the Abaata Fortress ruins, the church resumed religious services in 2012 after serving as a museum of weapons during the Soviet period.

The building combines elements of early medieval Christian architecture with traditional Georgian basilica design, featuring a distinct three-nave layout within its structure.
