Lungomare, Opatija Riviera, Coastal promenade in Opatija Riviera, Croatia
Lungomare is a paved waterfront promenade that stretches about 12 kilometers along the Adriatic Sea, connecting the towns of Volosko, Opatija, Icici, Ika, and Lovran. The path follows the shoreline with views of the sea and the hilly landscape beyond.
Construction of the promenade began in 1889 during the Austro-Hungarian period, with the final section to Lovran completed in 1911. This development was part of modernizing the coast as a fashionable destination for wealthy visitors from Central Europe.
The pathway passes elegant villas from the 1800s and features the statue of a Girl with Seagull, which reflects the maritime heritage of the region. These landmarks shape the character of the walk and tell stories of the coast's prosperous past.
The path is flat and paved throughout, making it easy to walk year-round. Along the route you will find benches, restaurants, and several access points to beaches, so you can pause or cool off whenever you wish.
Mediterranean plants grow wild between the stone walls and the sea, blending with tended gardens along the way. This natural mixture of cultivated growth and coastal beauty sets the walk apart from typical urban promenades.
