Timewheel, Installation artwork near City Park, Hungary

The Timewheel stands as a massive hourglass structure made of granite, steel, and glass, weighing 60 tons with glass granules flowing through its chambers.

The structure opened on May 1, 2004, marking Hungary's entry into the European Union, replacing a former statue of Lenin at its location.

The Timewheel represents the continuous flow of time through its year-long sand cycle, connecting Hungarian traditions with modern artistic expression.

Four technicians rotate the structure 180 degrees every New Year's Eve, using steel cables and built-in rails in a process that takes 45 minutes.

The sand within the Timewheel consists of finely ground glass particles that take exactly one year to flow from the upper chamber to the lower section.
