Millennium Monument, Memorial monument in Heroes' Square, Budapest, Hungary
The Millennium Monument is a monument on Heroes' Square in Budapest featuring a 36-meter column with the Archangel Gabriel at the top. Two semicircular colonnades frame the column and hold seven bronze figures each from different periods of Hungarian history.
Construction began in 1896 to mark the thousandth anniversary of the Hungarian conquest and continued over several decades. After World War I, some figures were replaced as Hungary lost territory and reassessed its history.
The seven equestrian statues at the base of the column depict the tribal chiefs who settled Hungary over a thousand years ago. Visitors often see wreaths laid at the pedestals during national celebrations.
The square sits at the end of Andrássy Avenue and can be reached on foot or by metro. The bronze figures and reliefs are easiest to view in daylight when the details are clearly visible.
The sculptures in the colonnades originally featured rulers of the Habsburg dynasty but were replaced after 1945 with Hungarian princes and freedom fighters. The angel atop the column holds the Hungarian crown and a double cross, two symbols of royal power.
