Kastelo de Szigliget

Kastelo de Szigliget is a stone fortification sitting 239 meters above Lake Balaton, with preserved walls, towers, and defensive structures spanning different construction periods. The site contains several exhibition areas that visitors can explore throughout their visit.

Construction started in 1261 under Pannonhalma Abbey monks, and the fortress became a key defensive position against Ottoman forces. A lightning strike in the 17th century caused significant damage that reshaped the structure.

The castle grounds serve as a space where traditional crafts come alive through demonstrations and workshops that visitors can watch and learn about. These activities reveal how people worked and lived during medieval times.

A steep path from the free parking area leads up to the castle entrance, where tickets provide access to all exhibition spaces on the grounds. Wear sturdy shoes since the climb is demanding and the ground is uneven in places.

From the castle walls, visitors can observe the volcanic formations of Tapolca Basin and the northern Lake Balaton shore with its vineyards stretching across the landscape. This vantage point reveals why the location was strategically chosen for defense.
