Court Theatre of Buda, Historic theatre in Budapest Castle District, Hungary
The Court Theatre of Buda occupies a monumental Baroque structure with three tiers of seating, originally constructed as a Carmelite monastery in 1736.
Emperor Joseph II ordered the transformation of the Carmelite monastery into a theatre in 1786, with Wolfgang von Kempelen designing the conversion of the altar into a stage.
The venue marked Hungarian theatrical history by hosting the first Hungarian-language performance on October 25, 1790, following years of German-only productions.
The building now serves as the office of Hungary's Prime Minister, located at Színház Street 1-3 in the Budapest Castle Quarter.
Ludwig van Beethoven performed a concert at this theatre in 1800, adding to its prominence in European musical heritage.
