Bodor Musical Fountain, Musical fountain on Margaret Island, Hungary
The Bodor Musical Fountain is a musical fountain on Margaret Island in Budapest, built around a circular pool with a central pavilion topped by a rotating statue. Water jets are synchronized with music, and evening shows add lighting effects to the display.
The design goes back to Péter Bodor, who built a music pavilion in the 1820s in what is now Târgu Mureș, Romania. That original structure was lost over time, but the concept was revived on Margaret Island in 1936 in the form of a musical fountain.
The fountain takes its name from Péter Bodor, a Transylvanian inventor who built a mechanical music pavilion in the 19th century. Today, people gather around it during performances, making it one of the natural meeting points on the island.
The fountain sits in the northern part of Margaret Island and is easy to reach on foot from either end of the island. Evening shows are worth the visit, as the lighting changes how the whole display looks compared to daytime.
The rotating figure on top of the pavilion was originally designed to function as a kind of clock, marking the hours. Most visitors today see it simply as a decorative element, unaware of this earlier purpose.
