Well of Souls, Sacred cave under the Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem, Israel

The Well of Souls contains a natural cave measuring 6 meters on each side with a ceiling height varying between 1.5 and 2.5 meters.

During the Crusader period in 1099, the site underwent transformation when the Dome of the Rock became a church and the cave served as the Holy of Holies.

According to Islamic traditions, this subterranean chamber functions as a gathering place for souls awaiting the Day of Judgment beneath the Foundation Stone.

Access to the cave requires descending 16 marble steps through an entrance that dates back to either the 7th or 9th century.

The cave features a central hole measuring 0.46 meters in diameter, potentially functioning as a former communal pit or ventilation shaft.
