Junagadh, Ancient city in Gujarat, India.
Junagadh is a city in Junagadh district, Gujarat, India, sitting at the base of the Girnar Hills at 107 meters elevation. Stone fortifications, religious buildings, and residential neighborhoods fill the urban area between flat land and the rising rock formations behind it.
The Uparkot Fort was built in 319 BCE and changed hands among different ruling dynasties over the centuries. Buddhist monks carved caves into the rock in the 3rd century BCE, and later Muslim rulers arrived and left their own buildings.
The name comes from Sanskrit meaning "old mountain", and today visitors see a mix of Hindu shrines, Islamic architecture, and Buddhist remains scattered through the streets. Morning prayers echo from both temples and mosques while residents go about their daily routines in neighborhoods that blend these traditions naturally.
The city has road and rail links to larger centers in Gujarat and beyond. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes because many sites involve slopes and uneven paths.
Some of the Ashoka inscriptions in Sanskrit are carved directly into natural rock formations and are among the few surviving original texts of the emperor. These stone writings sit near the city and still show the ancient letters clearly on the surface.
