Bhimtal is a hill settlement in the Kumaon region at 1450 meters elevation, organized around a freshwater lake with a small island. Homes, shops, and a temple are distributed along the shoreline and surrounding slopes of this compact community.
This settlement developed before Nainital became prominent and served as a rest point along ancient trade and pilgrimage routes. A local ruler built the lakeside temple in the 17th century, which remains a landmark of the settlement.
The name comes from the Hindu deity Bhima, reflecting beliefs visible throughout the settlement. Pilgrims gather at the lakeside temple to participate in daily worship and seasonal festivals.
The climate is mild, with average temperatures from 15 to 29 degrees Celsius in summer and 4 to 18 degrees Celsius in winter. Layered clothing is recommended year-round, and a light jacket is useful for the cooler months and evenings.
An aquarium is located on the small island in the lake center, housing freshwater fish species found in the region. This facility on the island offers visitors a close-up view of local aquatic life in an unexpected location.
