Gujarat University is a state public university in Navarangpura, a neighborhood of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, India. The institution consists of several faculty buildings, libraries, student hostels, and administrative offices spread across a large campus area.
The university was established in November 1949, after leaders of the Indian independence movement had called for such an educational institution in Gujarat as early as the 1920s. In the decades following its opening, it grew into one of India's largest university networks.
The campus carries a name that translates to "teacher's residence" in local Gujarati, reflecting the academic mission of the institution. Students from more than a dozen Indian states gather here to study at one of the country's largest universities, which spans hundreds of affiliated colleges.
The campus is located in the Navarangpura neighborhood and can be reached via main roads from different parts of Ahmedabad. Visitors can enter the public areas of the grounds during daytime hours, though academic buildings may have restricted access.
The institution operates its own radio station at 90.8 MHz, run by students and broadcasting educational programs and campus news to surrounding neighborhoods. Several prominent politicians and business figures of modern India completed their academic degrees here across different decades.
