The monastery stands on a conical hill at 13,500 feet elevation, containing prayer chambers connected through narrow passages and multiple floor levels.
Founded in the 11th century by Dromton, the monastery endured Mongol invasions in the 17th century and transformed into a Gelugpa institution.
The monastery holds ancient murals, manuscripts, stucco images, and traditional wind instruments used during summer performances of the Chham dance.
Visitors can reach the monastery by road from Kaza, located 12 kilometers away, or take an 8.5-kilometer hiking trail from the town.
The monastery maintains a collection of weapons that were used to protect against invaders and assert authority over the local population.
