University of Kerala, Public university in Thiruvananthapuram, India
The University of Kerala is a state public university in Thiruvananthapuram in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The main administration sits at the Senate House Campus in Palayam, while large research facilities and modern lecture halls are located in the southern part of the city near Kariavattom.
Maharajah Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma founded this institution in 1937 as the University of Travancore, making it one of the first sixteen universities in the country. After Indian independence it was renamed University of Kerala and grew into the academic center for the entire state.
The name Kerala comes from the Malayalam word meaning land of coconut palms and reflects regional identity. Students today attend lectures in buildings of different architectural styles that spread across several neighborhoods and are connected by public transport.
Teaching takes place at distributed locations, so visitors need to navigate different neighborhoods depending on the academic department. Public buses and rickshaws connect the campuses, though travel times can vary depending on traffic conditions.
An observatory from 1838 stands on the grounds and still operates today, making it among the oldest in all of India. The facility continues to conduct astronomical observations and collects weather data for scientific purposes.
