Alibag, Coastal settlement in Raigad district, India.
Alibag is a coastal town in Raigad district, located about 95 kilometers (59 miles) south of Mumbai along the Arabian Sea. The settlement includes several beaches and a fishing harbor where boats arrive daily.
In the 17th century, Maratha Admiral Kanhoji Angre established a naval base here to control the coast. He built fortifications along the shore that remain partly visible today.
The name comes from Ali, a local merchant who lived here when the settlement grew in the 17th century. During festivals, people gather at the shore, and many families still catch fish using traditional methods or grow coconuts and mangoes in the surrounding villages.
Ferries run regularly from the Gateway of India in Mumbai and take about an hour to reach the harbor. Alternatively, road connections run along the Mumbai-Goa coastal route, giving access to the settlement and surrounding villages.
Kolaba Fort sits on a small island near the main beach and becomes reachable on foot through the water at low tide. The walk across the seabed takes about half an hour and passes through shallow water that disappears completely at high tide.
