Tanakpur is a rural settlement in Champawat district, situated along the Sarda River near the Nepal border in Uttarakhand. The town occupies a low-lying area that serves as a natural gateway between the plains and the mountain foothills to the north.
The settlement was established as a market town around 1880, transforming the forested landscape into a commercial center. The original name Talakpur, derived from Lord Talak, was eventually changed to its current form.
The village serves as the primary access point for pilgrims traveling to the sacred Purnagiri Temple, located 24 kilometers north of the settlement.
The town is easily accessible by bus along National Highway 9, with regular connections to nearby areas. As an active settlement, it offers basic services and maintains a typical village pace, so visitors should adjust their expectations accordingly.
