Paonta Sahib, Religious town in Sirmaur district, India
Paonta Sahib is a town in Sirmaur district on the left bank of the Yamuna River in the foothills of Himachal Pradesh. The settlement extends along the state border with Uttarakhand and provides access to the deeper valleys of the Himalayas.
Guru Gobind Singh founded the settlement in the late 17th century and lived there for more than four years while composing religious writings. The town later became a center of Sikh pilgrimage and developed into an industrial area during the 20th century.
The Gurudwara Paonta Sahib houses a museum displaying original weapons and artifacts from the time of the tenth Sikh Guru.
The town sits on National Highway 72 and can be reached by bus from Shimla, Dehradun, and Chandigarh. Visitors will find accommodation in different categories as well as shops and restaurants along the main roads.
The town hosts factories for musical instruments, pharmaceuticals, and textiles as well as the largest limestone market in Asia in nearby Sataun. The industrial development has transformed the former pilgrimage center into one of the most important production sites in the region.
