Guru Shikhar, Mountain peak in Mount Abu, India

Guru Shikhar is the highest peak of the Aravalli Range, rising 1722 meters above the surrounding landscape. From the top, you can see across a vast expanse of Rajasthan, especially on clear days.

The summit's cave temple is dedicated to Dattatreya, an incarnation of Vishnu, and is named Guru-Shikhar, "the peak of the guru", after him. A shrine to his mother Anasuya, wife of the sage Atri, stands nearby. The sources give no construction date for the temple.

The summit holds a temple dedicated to Guru Dattatreya, a figure that Hindu devotees associate with the union of three major deities. Pilgrims and visitors come to meditate and spend time in contemplation at this sacred location.

A road from Mount Abu runs about 15 km and leads almost to the top of the mountain, so the climb on foot is short. The summit holds the Dattatreya temple, the shrine to Anasuya nearby and the Mt Abu Observatory next to the temple. The site lies in Sirohi district, 75 km from Sirohi city.

The Mt Abu Observatory beside the temple is run by the Physical Research Laboratory and holds a 1.2 m infrared telescope, with several astronomy experiments on site. The white domed building with its small annex stands on the flattened ridge, visible from the road winding up the slope.
