Devigarh is a hilltop palace in Delwara, a small village northeast of Udaipur in Rajasthan, India, rising across seven levels against the Aravalli hills. It has marble halls, open courtyards, and guest rooms that look out over the surrounding landscape.
The palace was built in 1760 by Raghudev Singh II as the seat of the rulers of the Delwara principality. It remained a royal residence for generations before falling into disuse in the 20th century and later being restored.
Delwara, the village where the palace stands, has long drawn pilgrims to its temples of different faiths. Walking through the area, you can still see how religious life shapes the pace and feel of daily life here.
The palace is a short drive northeast of Udaipur, making it easy to combine with a visit to the city. Going in the morning is a good idea, as the light on the stone and marble is best at that time of day.
During the restoration, workers used only marble and semi-precious stones sourced from within Rajasthan, the same region where the palace stands. This means the floors and walls carry materials that were mined just a short distance away, giving the interiors a strong local character.
