Father Muller Medical College, Medical College
Father Muller Medical College is a private medical institution in Kankanady, Mangaluru, run by the Diocese of Mangalore. It offers programs in medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, medical laboratory technology, radiography, and speech therapy, with students gaining hands-on experience at the attached hospital and rural health centers.
The institution traces its roots to 1880, when German priest Father Augustus Muller founded a hospital and began dispensing homeopathic medicines under a large Banyan tree. The medical college opened in 1991, growing out of a nursing school that had been training healthcare workers for decades before that.
The campus in Kankanady brings together students from many parts of India, each carrying different languages and habits. This mix shapes daily life on the grounds, especially during shared meals and events held after classes.
The campus sits in Kankanady and is easy to reach from Mangaluru's city center, airport, and main roads. The grounds are tidy with seating areas and clear pathways, which makes moving around on foot straightforward for anyone visiting.
The St. Joseph Chapel on the grounds was built in 1905, making it one of the oldest structures on the campus still in use today by students and staff. Although the medical college only opened in 1991, the chapel predates it by nearly a century, carrying the memory of the original hospital founded under that Banyan tree.
