Gowalkot

Gowalkot is a fort situated on a small hill overlooking the Vashishti River, with water forming natural barriers on three sides. A defensive trench completes the protection on the remaining side, creating a well-defended location.

The fort was originally constructed by King Chougle and subsequently passed between different rulers including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the Siddis, the Peshwas, and finally the British. These transitions reflect the region's shifting power dynamics over time.

The temples dedicated to local deities create gathering places for prayer and observation, making the fort grounds a space where spiritual life continues naturally.

Access to the fort is via rocky steps located behind the Karanjeshwari temple, with the climb taking around 15 minutes. Wear sturdy shoes as the path involves uneven ground and occasional loose rocks.

Six British-made cannons sit on a central platform at the fort, discovered on the riverbank and transported to their current location. These weapons serve as tangible reminders of the military strategies employed during different periods of occupation.
