Gowalkot, Hill fort in Ratnagiri district, India
The fort rises on a small hill by the Vashishti River, with three sides surrounded by water and a protective trench on the fourth side.
Originally built by King Chougle, the fort changed ownership multiple times between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the Siddis, the Peshwas, and the British until 1818.
The fort grounds contain temples dedicated to Lord Som and Goddess Karanjeshwari at the base, plus a shrine to Goddess Redjai at the summit.
Visitors can reach the fort entrance through rocky steps behind the Karanjeshwari temple, with the ascent taking approximately fifteen minutes to complete.
The fort houses six British-made cannons on a central platform, which were discovered on the riverbank and later relocated to their current position.
