Kattappana, Municipal settlement in Kerala, India
Kattappana is a settlement in the Western Ghats at about 1100 meters elevation and serves as the commercial center of Idukki district. The town sits in a hilly region dotted with plantations and provides shops, services, and offices for the surrounding villages.
The settlement grew in the 1950s when families arrived from Pala, Kanjirapally, and Thodupuzha seeking opportunity in the region. This migration built the foundation for its rise to municipal status, which came in 2015.
The people here are deeply connected to farming, especially growing cardamom, pepper, coffee, and tea on the slopes. You can see these crops shaping the landscape and the rhythm of daily life.
A major hospital with around 450 beds serves patients from across the surrounding region. Visitors should arrive early to avoid traffic on the main shopping streets, especially on weekends.
This place became the first municipality in Kerala to eliminate open defecation in 2016. It shows how even smaller settlements can achieve major public health improvements.
