Khar, human settlement in India
Khar is a residential neighborhood in western Mumbai, sitting between Bandra to the south and Santacruz to the north, and divided into Khar East and Khar West. Tree-lined streets run through the area, bordered by homes, local shops, restaurants, and small parks near the seafront.
The name Khar comes from a Marathi word meaning salty, a reference to the salt production that once took place along its shores. The railway station, opened in 1924, accelerated the growth of the area and helped it develop into a distinct neighborhood.
Khar West is known for its busy stretch of Linking Road, where locals shop at small stores and eat at casual restaurants throughout the day. The Sindhi community, which settled here after 1947, has shaped much of the commercial life you see along the main streets.
Khar Road railway station sits on the Western Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway, making it easy to reach from central Mumbai or the airport. Within the neighborhood, auto-rickshaws and taxis are easy to find, and Khar West is compact enough to explore on foot.
Khar has long attracted Bollywood figures, including singer Asha Bhosle and composer S. D. Burman, who lived here for many years. Despite this connection to the film world, the neighborhood has never developed a celebrity trail or tourism infrastructure around it.
