South Gujarat, Geographical region in western Gujarat, India.
South Gujarat is a geographical region in western Gujarat that borders the Arabian Sea with fertile plains stretching inland. Two major rivers, the Narmada and Tapi, flow westward through this area shaping its landscape and hydrology.
The region contains numerous archaeological sites from the Indus Valley civilization, including the ancient port city of Lothal founded around 3700 BCE. These early settlements demonstrate that this area has been an important center for trade and habitation for millennia.
South Gujarat is home to multiple traditional textile workshops where artisans create intricate patterns using natural dyes and handloom techniques passed down through generations. You can still see these crafts practiced in villages throughout the region as part of daily life.
The area experiences high temperatures exceeding 35°C during summer months from March to May, while southeastern sections receive substantial annual rainfall around 2000 mm. Plan visits for the cooler months between October and February when travel conditions are most comfortable.
The region encompasses sections of five distinct terrestrial zones ranging from mangrove forests near the Indus Delta to deciduous woodlands in the Western Ghats. This variety of natural habitats within a compact area creates a remarkable pocket of biodiversity.
