St. Joseph's Convent High School Patna, school in Patna, Bihar, India
St. Joseph's Convent High School Patna is a girls school located in the Bankipore area of Patna, Bihar. The campus brings together several buildings, sports fields, a library, science and math labs, and music rooms, covering classes from grade I through XII.
The school was founded in 1853 by Bishop Anastasius Hartmann, when a group of sisters from Germany came to Patna to run it and care for orphans. Over the following decades it grew steadily and is now considered one of the oldest schools in Bihar.
The school is run by the Sisters of the Congregation of Jesus, a religious group with a long tradition of running schools for girls. Students are divided into four house groups named after gemstones, Ruby, Topaz, Emerald, and Sapphire, which encourage teamwork and a sense of belonging.
The campus is in the Bankipore area of Patna and is best approached outside of regular school hours, when the site is less restricted. Anyone wishing to visit the facilities should contact the school administration in advance to arrange access.
The school belongs to the Congregation of Jesus, founded in 1609, which was one of the first religious groups for women to place formal education at the center of its mission. Unlike many similar groups of that era, its members were not cloistered, which gave them freedom to teach beyond convent walls.
