Deo Surya Mandir, Hindu temple in Deo Block, Bihar, India
Deo Surya Mandir is a Hindu temple in Deo Block, Bihar, built from carved black and brown stone. The architecture shows influences similar to those of the Jagannath Temple in Puri, with detailed reliefs and a tall shikhara.
The site dates back to the 8th century, when early Hindu architectural forms spread through the region. The current structure was built under Raja Bhairendra Singh, who developed the place as a center of worship.
The temple takes its name from Surya, the sun deity in Hindu tradition, and the site continues to draw worshippers year-round. During Chhath Puja in spring and autumn, pilgrims gather at the nearby sacred water to perform their rituals.
The entrance faces west and leads to a courtyard surrounded by several shrines. The path to the temple crosses open ground, and the nearby Dev Kund pond is within walking distance.
Inscriptions in Sanskrit and Brahmi script on the walls may point to a foundation during the reign of King Pururava Aila. These texts offer clues about older worship sites that may have existed before the current structure.
