Tomb of Sher Shah Suri, 16th-century royal tomb in Sasaram, India
The octagonal mausoleum rises 122 feet high from an artificial lake, featuring three stories crowned by a massive central dome with corner pavilions.
The tomb was completed in 1545 to honor Sher Shah Suri, founder of the Sur Empire who implemented administrative reforms across North India.
The structure incorporates Indo-Islamic architectural elements with sandstone walls decorated in Quranic verses, floral patterns, and geometric designs.
The Archaeological Survey of India maintains the monument, which visitors can access through a causeway constructed in 1914 from the mainland.
The mausoleum stands as the largest tomb structure built during its period in India, positioned on a square platform within an artificial water body.
