Tomb of Hasan Shah Suri

Tomb of Hasan Shah Suri, 16th-century tomb in Sasaram, India.

The Tomb of Hasan Shah Suri is a 16th-century octagonal mausoleum set on a square platform above an artificial lake. The three-story structure culminates in a large central dome, with each facade featuring three arched openings and decorative pavilions anchoring the upper corners.

This mausoleum was commissioned around 1542 by Sher Shah Suri to honor his father Hasan Shah. Construction was completed in 1545 under the supervision of Islam Shah Suri.

The structure displays Indo-Islamic design features with arched openings, latticed stone screens, and carved details across its surfaces. This blend of architectural styles reflects the artistic traditions that shaped the region during the era of its construction.

Access to the tomb is via a causeway connecting the mainland to the structure, making for an easy walk across the water. Guided tours are available during daylight hours, and visitors should wear sturdy footwear as surfaces can be uneven.

The causeway leading to the tomb creates an isolated island setting that feels like entering a sacred space removed from the outside world. This arrangement has allowed visitors across centuries to experience a sense of separation and reflection at the burial site.
