Pilak, Tripura, Archaeological site in Jolaibari, South Tripura, India
The Pilak archaeological complex spans 10 square kilometers, containing numerous stone sculptures, terracotta plaques, and brick structures scattered across multiple excavation locations.
The site flourished between the 8th and 12th centuries as part of the Samatata kingdom, forming a network with Mainamati and Somapura Mahavihara in historical Bengal.
The excavated artifacts display a combination of Hindu and Buddhist elements, including sculptures of Shiva, Surya, and various Buddhist deities from Hinayana and Mahayana traditions.
Located 100 kilometers from Agartala and 3 kilometers from Jolaibari, the site receives approximately 200 visitors daily under Archaeological Survey of India management.
The sandstone statues include an 8th-century cone-shaped stone slab with a partial Buddha figure, featuring specific artistic details such as close-curled hair patterns.
