Pilak, Tripura, Archaeological site in Jolaibari, South Tripura, India

Pilak is an archaeological site with scattered stone sculptures, terracotta plaques, and brick structures spread across multiple excavation areas. The finds reveal layers of occupation and building activity from different periods.

The site flourished from the 8th to 12th century as part of the Samatata kingdom and was linked to other major centers of that era. The remains show how this place functioned as an important religious and cultural hub over many centuries.

The sculptures and plaques show elements from both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, telling stories of gods and spiritual figures through stone and clay. You can see how different faiths coexisted and influenced the art created here.

You reach the site through the nearby town and it sits in South Tripura in northeastern India. The management by the Archaeological Survey ensures that there are clear pathways through the excavation areas.

Among the finds are sandstone statues with specific artistic details that were uncommon in stone carving of that era. These works display craftsmanship techniques that are rarely documented elsewhere and help understand the artistic skill of the region.
