Doodh Talai Lake, body of water
Doodh Talai is a small lake in the center of Udaipur, surrounded by maintained gardens, parks, and green hills that create a calm setting for visitors. The shallow water stretches for several hundred meters and is ringed by walking paths and resting spots that invite relaxation and observation of the surroundings.
The lake originated in Udaipur's royal past, serving as a water source for the royal household's cattle, which gave it its name. Over time, it evolved from a practical space for royal operations into a recreation area for locals and visitors.
The name Doodh Talai means 'milk pond' in the local language, reflecting its past role as a water source for the royal household's cattle. Visitors today can sense this connection to daily life and royal traditions as they walk through the gardens and experience the calm setting.
The lake sits just a few kilometers from the railway station and bus depot, easily reached by auto-rickshaw, taxi, or horse-drawn carriage from the city center. The visit is made easier by multiple entry points, walking paths, and rest areas, with morning and evening hours offering the most pleasant conditions.
A cable car connects the lake to a nearby hilltop, offering views of the water and city below during a four-minute ride. This ropeway was the first of its kind in Rajasthan and gives visitors an elevated perspective on Udaipur.
