Kidangoor Subramanya Temple

Kidangoor Subramanya Temple, Hindu temple in Kottayam district, India

Kidangoor Subramanya Temple sits on the banks of Meenachil River and features two main shrines dedicated to Subrahmanya and Vishnu deities. The structure combines traditional Kerala temple design with religious spaces visited daily by worshippers and pilgrims.

The temple was built before the 11th century and once marked the boundary between the ancient kingdoms of Vadakkumkur and Thekkumkur. This location made the site an important point in Kerala's early geography and political divisions.

The temple complex houses a Koothambalam performance space where artists present classical shows following ancient Natyasastra guidelines. These traditions shape how the local community experiences dance and music as part of its religious and artistic life.

The temple opens at 4:30 AM for morning rituals such as Ganapathi Homam and Ushapooja, while evening ceremonies begin at 5:00 PM. Visitors should arrive early to experience the temple when religious activities are most active.

The main shrine holds an idol that legend says emerged from a sage's water vessel and traveled by water to arrive here. This water-based origin story creates a memorable link between the deity and the river location.
