PNS Hameed, Naval transmitter station in Sindh, Pakistan.
PNS Hameed is a naval transmitter station located near Karachi in the province of Sindh, Pakistan. It uses very low frequency radio signals, which can travel through seawater and reach submarines operating below the surface of the Arabian Sea.
The station opened in November 2016 at a ceremony attended by senior naval and military figures. Its inauguration marked the beginning of a dedicated underwater communications network for Pakistan's submarine fleet.
The station is named after Lieutenant-Commander Pervez Hameed, an officer who served aboard the submarine PNS Ghazi and died in action. Within the Pakistani Navy, this kind of naming is a way of keeping the memory of fallen sailors connected to the work that continues in their name.
This is an active military facility with no public access, so visits are not possible. The surrounding area is a restricted military zone, and it is important to respect any marked perimeters in the vicinity.
This was the first station of its kind ever built in Pakistan, giving the country its first direct radio link to submarines at depth. Very low frequency signals are used because standard radio waves cannot pass through seawater.
