Dolphin's Nose lighthouse

Dolphin's Nose lighthouse, lighthouse on the east coast of India

Description

Dolphin's Nose is a lighthouse situated on a rocky headland that protrudes into the sea. The structure stands on Dolphin Hill at an elevation of around 173 meters and reaches about 19 meters in height, painted in white and black bands that make it visible from a distance.

History

The original lighthouse was built in the 19th century by the British to help ships navigate safely through local waters. A cyclone destroyed the original structure in 1876, and a new lighthouse was constructed in the 1960s to replace it.

Culture

The lighthouse takes its name from its distinctive shape that resembles a dolphin's snout. Locals and visitors regard this place as a landmark that reflects the maritime heritage of the region and serves as a quiet sentinel over the coast.

Practical

The lighthouse is open to visitors daily from 3 PM to 5 PM; wear comfortable shoes and check the weather forecast beforehand for good visibility. There is a small parking fee, and the stairs are steep, so climb carefully, especially if traveling with children.

Did you know?

The lighthouse beam can be seen from approximately 65 kilometers away at sea. The structure is also equipped with storm-tracking tools that help warn ships and the local area of approaching bad weather.
