Fimmvörðuháls, Mountain pass between Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers in Rangárþing eystra, Iceland.
Fimmvörðuháls is a mountain pass through volcanic terrain at about 1080 meters elevation, with steep ridges and deep valleys throughout. Numerous waterfalls cascade down the landscape, and the route offers views across the surrounding highlands.
The area experienced a volcanic eruption in April 2010 that preceded the larger Eyjafjallajökull eruption. This event disrupted European air traffic for several weeks.
The name means 'Pass of Five Cairns', referencing stone markers that have guided travelers through this challenging mountain passage for centuries. You can still see these old markers along the route today.
The hiking route is typically accessible from June to September, though you will need proper equipment and should monitor weather conditions closely. Conditions in the highlands can shift quickly and unexpectedly.
The pass forms part of the Laugavegur trail system, where you can see two glaciers and recent lava formations from the 2010 eruption at the same time. This combination of active geological features and historical traces makes the location particularly striking.
