Sólheimajökull, Outlet glacier in South Iceland.

Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier on Iceland's south coast that flows downward from the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, displaying dark volcanic ash bands across its frozen surface. The ice stretches roughly eight kilometers long and two kilometers wide as it descends.

This glacier sits near an active volcano that drew attention from scientists after a major eruption in 2010 affected Europe's skies. Increased monitoring of the region began following that event to track any significant changes.

The nearby glacial river takes its name from the strong smell caused by volcanic minerals in the water. Locals have long recognized this distinctive feature of the landscape.

Visitors should join guided tours led by professionals who provide safety equipment such as crampons and helmets for moving on the ice. Tours run throughout the year, though conditions and daylight vary greatly depending on the season.

The glacier's surface constantly shifts as new cracks form in the ice regularly. Each year the ice retreats noticeably, and these changes are directly visible to anyone walking across it.
