Vík í Mýrdal

Vík í Mýrdal is a settlement on the southern shore of Iceland, positioned between cliffs and dark volcanic sand. The houses sit scattered along a single main road, with mountains and glacier tongues rising behind them.

Originally inhabited by fishermen who relied on the sea for their livelihood, the settlement grew into a supply point for travelers from the early 20th century onward. It now stands as a stopover on the ring road after tourism reshaped the economy of the area.

The residents of Vík maintain strong connections to maritime traditions while adapting their community to support tourism and environmental preservation.

Shops, lodgings, and fuel stations line the through road, making short stops or overnight stays straightforward. Visitors on foot can reach most facilities within a few minutes from the center of the settlement.

The church on the highest ground serves as a refuge during eruptions from the nearby volcano, since its position lies above possible flood waves. Sirens throughout the settlement alert residents and visitors when volcanic activity occurs.
