Fjaðrárgljúfur

Fjaðrárgljúfur, Natural canyon in Southern Region, Iceland.

Fjaðrárgljúfur is a canyon in southern Iceland that extends across several kilometers with rock walls reaching about 100 meters high. A small river flows through the gorge and has shaped the U-shaped walls and winding structures of the canyon over time.

The canyon formed approximately 9,000 years ago when glacial meltwater carved through palagonite rock during the last ice age. This natural erosion process gradually shaped the deep walls and distinctive form visible today.

The canyon became internationally known after featuring in a major music video production, which significantly increased visitor numbers. It has since become a popular destination for photographers and travelers seeking to capture its striking rock formations.

Access is via Road 206 from Ring Road 1, where parking is available and marked trails lead to several viewing platforms. Sturdy footwear is recommended and visitors should be prepared for changing weather conditions, as the site is exposed to the elements.

The Fjaðrá river flowing through the gorge changes its water level seasonally, creating different patterns in the curves of the rock walls. These fluctuations also affect the color intensity of the rock layers, giving the canyon a different appearance throughout the year.
