Appennino Lucano - Val d'Agri - Lagonegrese National Park, National park in Potenza province, Italy
Appennino Lucano - Val d'Agri - Lagonegrese National Park spans 690 square kilometers across the southern Apennines and contains mountain ranges, dense forests, and river valleys. The terrain is cut by several rivers and displays varied landscapes with different vegetation patterns at different elevations.
The park was established in 2007 to protect the natural heritage lying between Cilento and Pollino national parks. This recognized the need to safeguard this mountain region after a long period without formal protection.
The 29 towns within the park preserve traditional crafts and regional food production methods that visitors can see in local shops and villages. These practices remain part of daily life in this mountain region.
Information centers throughout the park provide maps and help arrange guided tours and educational programs about local wildlife and vegetation. It helps to stop at one of these centers before exploring to get oriented and learn about what you will see.
Monte Volturino rises to 1,836 meters (6,024 feet) and creates distinct microclimates that support over 1,000 plant species across different elevation zones. This concentration of plant variety in one location makes the mountain a remarkable place for seeing how conditions change rapidly with height.
