Celio, 19th rione of Rome, Italy
Celio is the 19th rione of Rome, identified by the initials R. XIX, and is located within the Municipio I. This area offers a great variety of tourist attractions and activities. It is home to many religious buildings and some archaeological remains such as the bust of an African that was found in Via Capo d'Africa. Up to 1870, the area was moderately inhabited and it was covered mainly with fields and vineyards, however, following the unification of Italy, the district was among the first to be urbanized. From 1872 to 1873 new service buildings and residences were constructed, as well as a military hospital which was built on the summit of the Caelian hill, next to the medieval site of Santo Stefano in Formis. The road scheme was re-developed in the lower part of the rione, near the Colosseo, and a big public housing complex was demolished. The plot replaced by the housing complex is now a public park. Additionally, the rion was established in 1921, detaching portions of land from Monti and Campitelli. This is a moderately inhabited and scarcely congested borough. It counts with a few multiplexes and other places for leisure. Although this rion is not overly crowded, it is densely packed with hotels and B&Bs for tourists due to its closeness to the Colosseo. It is possible to experience the rich and diverse culture that the city has to offer. Celio is a great place to visit to learn more about events and architecture throughout the centuries, not to mention its incredible gastronomy. The area is surrounded by an impressive urban landscape, art galleries, restaurants and other amenities, making it an ideal place for a memorable vacation.
