Lago di Santa Croce, Alpine lake in Province of Belluno, Italy
Lago di Santa Croce is an Alpine lake in Belluno Province that covers roughly 7 square kilometers at an elevation near 400 meters. The water is ringed by forested slopes and forms the largest lake in the region.
The lake formed from a natural basin that was enlarged through dam construction during the 1930s. This project reshaped the landscape and created the large water body we see today.
The lake's name comes from a nearby church that has long shaped local spiritual life. People gather along the shores to fish, walk, and enjoy their connection to the water and surrounding landscape.
The lake is ringed by hiking and cycling routes that offer paths for different skill levels. The shoreline is easy to reach, and several viewpoints provide views across the water toward the surrounding mountains.
The Sbarai wetland area along the shore is an important stopping point for migrating birds including Grey Herons and White Storks. The site draws bird watchers and nature enthusiasts from across the region.
