Paolo Sarpi Zone, Chinese neighborhood near Porta Volta, Milan, Italy
The Paolo Sarpi Zone is a Chinese neighborhood in Milan featuring shops, restaurants, and wholesale businesses concentrated along its main streets. Via Paolo Sarpi forms the central axis, with a varied mix of storefronts and buildings extending across multiple blocks.
Chinese immigrants arrived in Milan beginning in the 1920s, coming from Paris after their service in World War I. From this early settlement, the neighborhood gradually developed into its present form.
The neighborhood shows a blend of traditional Italian shops and Chinese businesses, where specialty bakeries stand alongside regional restaurants. This coexistence shapes the character of the streets, where visitors experience local and Chinese food culture side by side.
The area is easy to reach by the M5 Monumentale Metro line or trams 4, 12, and 14. Most shops and restaurants are concentrated along Via Paolo Sarpi and nearby streets, making it straightforward to explore on foot.
In 2011 the neighborhood received a redesign with stone paving and green spaces, creating a pedestrian zone that becomes especially lively during Chinese New Year. This transformation brought more open space and greenery to a densely built area.
