Torre del Gardello, Gothic tower in Piazza Erbe, Verona, Italy
The Torre del Gardello rises 44 meters above Piazza Erbe at the intersection of two ancient Roman roads, the cardo and decumano massimo.
Completed in 1370 under Cansignorio Della Scala's commission, this structure served as Verona's first bell tower and remained the tallest building until Torre dei Lamberti.
The tower contained the first public clock in Verona during the 15th century, featuring San Zeno's image and the Scaliger emblem on its mechanism.
Visitors can locate the Torre del Gardello at Piazza Erbe 38, while the original clock mechanism is now displayed at the Museum of Castelvecchio.
The tower's mechanical clock, created from melted materials by Cansignorio, stood among the earliest public timekeeping devices in Europe during the medieval period.
